Helen asks…
catering for a community party?
the local neighbourhood group are planning to hold a Christmas party for local children in the community centre we are a bit confused about the laws and what have you regarding the catering. We planned on doing it ourselves, making sandwiches, jellies etc but have been told that we cant do this unless someone is qualified? Can anyone enlighten me as to the rules about this sort of event. Thank you.

The Expert answers:
It depends on where you are having it, its always different.

I am planning on opening a home based business catering food, what kind of license would i need? insurance?
I live in Houston, Texas. The basis of my business is to make lunch daily for customers and deliver to their jobs. Also added to that will be social events such as weddings, business meetings, parties of any type, etc.

The Expert answers:
Different cities have different rules.
Get in touch with the city government and ask them what requirements they have for your situation.
Sounds like a great idea.
Good Luck

Mary asks…
advice on opening a banquet/reception hall/multipurpose facility?
I am recently engaged and started looking at wedding reception venues…NOTHING in my city is cheap because there aren’t many options aside from hotels, so i had this bright idea to just spend the money on purchasing a facility and do all the decorating and planning myself and then just rent out the facility as a multipurpose facility.
My question is, is it possible/realistic to continue to rent it out for the same types of events without actually being event planners/coordinators? Maybe just provide tables/chairs, etc. but then have the “renters” of the events do their own planning/catering and/or hire their own planners/caterers?
What things would I need to do something like this??

Chris asks…
We are trying to plan a party for our parents 60th wedding anniversary?
One sister has gone and told mom what we were planning, and mom doesn’t want what we are planning. She has gone as far as telling us who to invite, and that she wants to get dressed up and go to an upscale restaurant. We had planned a catered event and the home of another sister, we were even planning on recreating their wedding cake.We want all the grandchildren and significant others to spend time together. It would not be as social at the restaurant. We would be a group of about 20 to 25 and we rarely get together as it is. We think big sister needs to tell mom that she should not worry about the party, she and dad are the guests of honor and should be grateful that we planning this for them. Who is right? Should we go ahead with our original plan or bow to mom’s somewhat ungrateful plan. We think that if Dad knew that big sister was doing this with mom he would blow a gasket. We need other opinions. Please help. Thanks!

Linda asks…
Anyone ever have an event catered by Golden Corral?
We are trying to find someone to cater our wedding coming up this June and Golden Corral came to mind. Has anyone used them as a caterer or know a ballpark figure before I call up there tomorrow? We are planning to feed about 125. Also if you have any other ideas for a caterer, I’d love to hear them!

The Expert answers:
Overall as a buffet they are good… Sometimes you get a cheap manager who tries to cut food costs by buying meat that served time as a plow horse, but overall it’s good buffet if not the best of the buffet’s

MAY YOU PLEASE HELP ME?
careers that would suit my skills? university?
- i have alot of ideas and i am very creative, and i am also very talented in drawing. however I am not very technical!
- i am talented in fashion illustration, but i wouldn’t be so great at a career that involves sowing.
- i have a passion for creativity and what i would want more than anything is to bring my ideas to life, and make people happy
- i am talented in event planning. i can come up with many ideas for an event including setup, activities, design, theme, purpose; aswell as come up with ideas for marketing it, attracting attention, and sending out a message, all directed and personalized for a chosen target market. then i research catering and services and come up with a budget plan that can get the most benefit at the lowest price. i think i can problem solve because when i throw crazy parties the damage is minimal, if not none.
- i am not about the money. if i do what i love, i know its crazy, but i would work for free! however i do LOVE money, and i am worried that event planning wouldn’t pay very much.
- my art teacher thinks i should be an illustrator. however i am very active and i wouldn’t be so happy sitting at a desk all day drawing.
if i could do anything i would have two jobs. i am most productive and reach my full potential when i alternate between activities, it keeps my concentration fresh and at best, so i would love it if i could be a self-employed event planner and also work part-time as an illustrator.
is this possible?
what is the average income for event planning, fashion illustration, illustration?
what career should be my major and minor?
any suggestions of careers that i would be good at?
what kind of university/college would be best for me?

The Expert answers:
Interior Designer? That suits your skills.

Help! I need to plan a catering menu?!?!?
A New Years/ 50th birthday event was placed in my hands at the last minute and I need some ideas for tummy-filling finger food dishes to serve. Between 30 and 40 people are expected.
I am thinking about serving something cajun (because the birthday girl is from Louisianna) but I cannot think of anything that would be cajun-yet-finger-foodish-and-easy-to-make. I also need some ethnic variety, so any ideas will be welcome! I do plan on making and serving a variety of sushi as well.
The event will be taking place at a bar, so gumbo or jambalaya or anything served in a bowl would be unwise….
THANKS!!

Here I come to the Rescue! Girl cooking is my life. I eat, breathe and dream about it. Haha. Some all-time party winner recepies that i can tell you to use are seven layered dip(make sure to use all fresh ingredients) I would give out my recepie, but then i’d have to kill you,
-Knorrs Spinach dip recepie that is located on the back of the Knorr box(all-time classic).
-Mini-shrimp cocktail bites:http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_11433,00.html?rsrc=search
-stuffed jalepenos
-And this is the one that i can’t believe my eyes that i am releasing, because it is my priced dish. But Cream Cheese Sausage with Asparagus Crepes: Cook peppered sausage till brown, drain the greese and mix in the cream cheese, add a little bit of marojam to it. Then make a simple crepe recepie(easy to find online) and place sausage mixture with 2 asparagus on top in individual crepes. Cook at about 350 for 25 mins. This is a killer dish and you will be getting begged by all acquaintances for this recepie. It’s easy to cut the crepes in half to create mass quantities as well.
-u can also try some meatball recepies
-make homemade eclairs
-and for the punch i would use lime sherbert with two 2 liters of ginger ale. And cut up individual limes in rounds for decor…
–My Life lines that i always trust for great recepies are: www.foodnetwork.com & www.tasteofhome.com

Survey: Name a situation where someone’s rudeness shocked/flabbergasted you?
I’ll go first…. I have an event planned this Saturday. It’s being catered with a “cash bar”. I let a few of my friends know there would be a cash bar so they don’t think I’m springing for drinks and show up with no cash.
You would not believe the backlash I am getting in emails.. like “WTF?” and “What? Can I BYOB”?
I just can’t believe the rudeness emanating from some of them…makes me wonder how we became friends in the first place.

The Expert answers:
I knew these people that used to screw in a stairwell. How rude!
