College grad in Austin, Texas?
I have heard numerous good things about Austin, Texas from a variety of different people. I am graduating college in May, and Austin was one the top 10 cities for new college graduates. I was just wondering if someone could give a little description about it? Considering there is a huge college there, I’m sure it has to be a fun city. I have been to SF and Chicago, if those are in close comparison. Also, I am a marketing major – does anyone know of any marketing/event planning firms there? Thank you!

The Expert answers:
I lived in Austin for two years. The Summers are brutal. The economy is great. Many high tech corp. Are there. Plus great football

David asks…
Should I start an online marketing company?
I have some services to make it different from others and unique. I will offer a range of services from branding, business consultancy, mobile marketing, event planning, social media expansion, PR etc. and many other ideas. I have some experience in marketing and believe I have the potential to effectively make the company more well known and connect them with more costumers. The thing is this industry is so so saturated as there are way too many marketing agencies online, how would I gain more clients? Is there any point going into a completely saturated Market where most agencies struggle?

The Expert answers:
If you want to operate exclusively online, you will quickly realize a saturated market means crazy marketing cost, so crazy that you will need more than a good and unique marketing offer to survive.
If you want to face the reality by yourself, create an Adwords Marketing Campaign and try to promote some keywords related to your business. Believe me, when you pay up to $5 per click on some keywords and see your $20 daily budget disappear in front of your very eyes in only a few clicks, you definitely come back to reality.
If you want to create your business in this saturated sector you will have to find new innovative (sometimes traditional) ways to promote your business “offline”.
If you want to get a complete overview on how to start an online store, I recommend buying the e-book How to Start an Online Business from Scratch and Achieve Success.
The link : http://howto-website.com/store/how-to-start-an-online-business.html
It will teach you the essentials for starting up an online business and more importantly the essentials to avoid common mistakes and find your way to profitability. By reading this eBook you should better understand why it’s such a bad idea to start a business online in a saturated market. It’s a small investment that is really worth it.
Wishing you good success!

Ken asks…
Marketing Manager salary question?
I work at a fortune 200 company. I am possibly in line for a promotion to be a midwest region marketing manager (i live in chicago), using sfdc, eloqua, and other tools, event planning, etc (basically making sure our product is selling). I dont make too much with them now, but i recently got my bachelor’s degree and suddenly they are very interested in me. Any ideas at all what salary could request and/or expect for this type of position? thanks.

The Expert answers:
Don’t know what the salaries are in the midwest; I’m from Vancouver, Canada. A new regional marketing manager here would earn between $60,000 and $80,000 a year to start (depends on number of people reporting, sales value of the market region, annual budget, etc.).

Carol asks…
What would be a good name for a charity event?
I’m writting a marketing plan…therefor I have to plan a charity event to support children with the desease called EB (Epidermolysis bullosa), a genetically skin disease which is not curable yet. This disease causes that the skin blisters and splinters off-peak when the children play around.
But I can’t think of a good name for it…could be in german as well!
thanks for helping me!

The Expert answers:
You didn’t mention much about the activity that you are planning (is a walk-a-thon, a dinner party, a fair) or where it’s being held (name of the city, for example). If you know some of these things, you can play with the words or use acronyms — “SKIN” or “CARE” or “TOUCH” — something that evokes a sense of caring for someone with this condition. Or somehow incorporate “EB” in the name — “DEBATE”, “WEB”, “CELEB”, “CELEBRATE”. Sorry, can’t help with the German part at all.
An unrelated, yet important comment. I notice that you have several spelling errors in your posting. It is important if you are writing (one “t”) a marketing plan that you use good grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Michael asks…
Creative Event Marketing… Any ideas?
I’ve been given a task to develop marketing plan for an up and coming trade exhibition (engineering related market).
The objective is to generate maximum impact in terms of brand awareness while trying to carefully target both exhibitors and visitors. The hard part is we want to achieve this without actually exhibiting at the event. – I bet your now thinking exactly what I was thinking when I heard this
Given budget is not really an issue at the moment, has anyone got any creative ideas (other than sponsorship and editorials etc) that could start pointing me in the right direction.
Any ideas appreciated.

The Expert answers:
Try this source. It’s free direct marketing ideas, which means the ideas have to produce ROI for you. Tons of free stuff here.

Nancy asks…
What major should i take in becoming an even promoter or marketer?
I really enjoy marketing things and planning events. Something like what heidi does on the hills. however i don’t know what major i should take up. Im planning on going to FIDM and was probably thinking of majoring in Merchandise Marketing. Am i headed in the right direction?

The Expert answers:
Hey there.
Marketing is a very broad category and includes a number of disciplines, two of which are Promotions and Event Planning.
If I were you, I’d major in Marketing. That might provide an entry to other courses, such as Public Relations, that you might find equally enjoyable.
If you want some additional advice, I’d also strongly encourage you to take some Web marketing classes. The Web has had a tremendous influence over the field of marketing the last several years, and that is only going to continue. I am not suggesting that you become a techie or a computer programmer, but the better you understand the Web and how it functions as a marketing tool, the more marketable you will be upon graduation.
Good luck to you.

Paul asks…
Jack Morton, GES, or a small custom exhibit house? Who do you go to get international event marketing support.
And why? What are the big differences in these companies? I guess I should throw in GPJ, Freeman, Nth Degree in the mix too. Is it more important to have brand and strategy planning or logistical support and country knowledge in looking for a partner in an overseas event. Should I source in-country?

The Expert answers:
It depends on what kind of support you want. If you go with a larger, national company, you will not get the one-on-one support that some prefer. They are large companies with many clients and you will not get that attention that you would with a smaller exhibit house. The exhibit house that we use has helped us with international shows as they have contacts overseas. People that they trust and work with on a regular basis. So when you call you have the manager who handles your account and also handles a smaller volume of clients so they are always readily available. Sometimes there is a cost benefit to using the official show decorator, which is your GES or Freeman. It just depends what you like!
